Are Flushable Wipes Really Safe to Flush?

Dawn S. • Jan 04, 2023

We’ve all used flushable wipes and probably have asked ourselves, “Do I just throw this in the toilet or not?”

The short answer is no.

The package may clearly say flushable but for the health of your toilet piping system in Hamilton, city sewers and septic tanks just dispose of them as you would tissues by making a point of not flushing them.

Flushable wipes have actually been tested and they don’t dissolve like toilet paper and could cause clogged toilets with abundant flushing. Most bathrooms have a waste basket in the room, just use that like you should for tissues, q-tips, feminine hygiene products and other non-flushable products. Yes, wet wipes are convenient but they are not truly flushable. They are made to be stronger than toilet paper which thereby makes them thicker than toilet paper and harder than toilet paper. Researchers have tested wipes that are marketed as flushable and have arrived at the conclusion that indeed they are not safe to flush. Also, the chemicals used in their manufacturing are not good for the sewage system. You could come across having to deal with a clogged toilet when flushable wipes are added to the mix what is flushed. The packaging of flushable wipes may even go as far as stating that they are safe to use with septic tanks, but do yourself a favour and don’t flush them. You will be asking for trouble.

If you are finding you are dealing with a frequently clogged toilet in Hamilton, ask other members of your house if they are tossing flushable wipes into the toilet. If they are, don’t get agitated, just explain the situation about flushable wipes and call a plumbing repair service in Hamilton.
